CHIL (CoHousing for Independent Living) is a SCIO (SC051399) which
grew
out of conversations between young adults with Down’s Syndrome together with
their parents and allies, around the need for person-centred homes which
support independence and build community.
Cohousing is anintentional community of private homes clustered around shared space. For example a group of friends may live
together in a flat that has its own bathroom and cooking facilities. They may
share living, laundry and gardening spaces with other flats in the same
community.
The benefits of cohousing for people with Down’s Syndrome include:
Becoming
active citizens, connecting with others and contributing to the community
Loneliness
and isolation is reduced
Shared
spaces offer more variety and space than can be achieved alone
Living
in homes designed with energy and space efficiency in mind
